30 Days of Christmas Cheer {Day 1}: Creating Memories and Traditions with Gingerbread House Making

30 Days of Christmas Cheer Day 1

“I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.” ― Charles Dickens

Mr. Dickens was right. That is exactly my sentiment this year and our thought behind this 30 Days of Christmas Cheer challenge! We’re so excited that you’re joining us for this FREE and FUN way of making Christmas a time of traditions and memories.

Creating Childhood Memories and Traditions Activity

I’m delighted to kick off the 30 Days of Christmas Cheer challenge with one of our family’s favourite Christmastime traditions: making Gingerbread Houses!

finlee gingerbread house

I’ve been doing the Gingerbread House making activity with Finlee and Chloe, every year since Finlee was a wee bub and while his attention span may have been limited, he sure remembers and looks forward to making our family Gingerbread House every Christmas!

Making Gingerbread houses doesn’t have to be complicated or even, Pinterest-worthy, but it has to be meaningful to your family and a fun way to savor the sweetness of togetherness during the holidays.

I’d recommend picking a Gingerbread House kit from Ikea, Coles or Woolsworths and you’re all set to create a memory and tradition your kids will look forward to every year.

I’ve always wondered about these gingerbread houses? Do they get eaten? When? How long do they last sitting out before going soggy (if they do)? Love reading through your 30 days of Christmas Cheer and am planning to do most with Miss 2 🙂

It depends on where you live with the gingerbread houses. In QLD we keep ours in the fridge at night to prevent soggy. Glad you’re loving our 30 Days of Christmas Cheer. xx

We’ve been making a gingerbread house every year since I was a kid. I’ve done kits and homemade (have to do homemade now since we have gluten allergies). They’ve never once gotten soft – they get rock hard after a while. My kids generally eat parts of the houses as they make them, so I make sure to have extra pieces. If I don’t have extra gingerbread then they start eating the houses as soon as they are finished. I try to keep the finished houses on the table as decoration, but they get picked at, so they only last… Read more »

Thanks for helping Kelly out. I too have the same problem where it sits on the table and gets picked at; ha ha ha.

I would love a great gingerbread recipe if anyone has one that’s been tried and tested. My kids don’t like the supermarket ones unfortunately. Thanks.

We did our first gingerbread house decorating activity last year and the kids loved it! It was fun to make and fun to nibble at for the days following christmas. I’m including the Ikea one in our 1 Dec box and I’m thinking this year rather than have heaps of packets of lollies/decorations, I might just include a little container full of lollies etc and a few laminated photos of ideas as inspiration that can go back in the box for next year. Can’t wait for 1 Dec!

I am in the process of putting together DIY gingerbread house kits for my nieces and nephews including pre baked gingerbread and all the trimmings to decorate it. I will pop a picture up in the group when I’m finished ? I love putting together family activity boxes for their gift every year, the parents seem to really love it too they always start asking me in the lead up what this years activity will be! It is also so much easier than picking out a toy for each of them when they seemingly have 3 of everything already!

For anyone pressed for time, or who has kids that don’t like gingerbread, I’ve made gingerbread houses in the past using graham crackers, royal icing, and various candies. Just nothing too heavy for candies. They come out very cute this way as well. This is how I used to do them with a classroom of children when I was teaching – a lot cheaper and easier than gingerbread.
