Potty Training Tips for the Stressed Out Mother

  1. Start when they AND you are ready

First things first, don’t rush into potty training your toddler just because your sister decided to potty train her son who’s the same age.

Instead, watch for readiness cues in your kids when they start telling you they want to be changed from a soiled nappy or diaper, when they show an interest in the “big” potty and when they are easily able to follow simple one-step instructions.

Besides these developmental cues, also look for emotional signs of readiness in your child. Pairing potty training with other stressful life events is a recipe for disaster, so if you’re moving house, schools or welcoming a new sibling into the family, hold off on the potty training for a bit.

Similarly, think about your own readiness too. If you’re in a particularly busy season of life, say a new job, a pregnancy, a great deal of travel, you may want to press pause on potty training plans.

  1. Have a plan in place

Speaking of plans, when you decide to potty train, create a plan and stick to it. Start by setting a date and also, focus on daytime training before moving to nighttime training.

Encourage children to use the potty say, every 20 to 30 minutes. You’d also want to plan to stay at home as much as possible so you don’t have accidents when out and about and are close to the potty each time they need to go.

Some of the other elements in your potty training plan can include shopping for big boy or big girl underwear together and letting them pick the characters and designs they like. Let it be a fun activity and get them all excited about it.

  1. Use rewards all the way

Finally and most importantly, use rewards and plenty of praise! Use a rewards chart to record and appreciate their progress.

Rewards work wonders with kids because they love instant gratification especially when younger and a box of rewards filled with goodies when they reach the rewards from their reward chart will be a super fun and yet simple way to encourage them to use the potty until it becomes a habit!
